In 1965, Westchester County acquired 278 acres from the Boyce Thompson Institute, a botanical research center. As a result, Sprain Ridge Park is home to many unusual and exotic woodland plants. The Thompson family, prominent in Yonkers history, amassed their wealth through mining.
Sprain Ridge Park is located on a ridge between the northbound and southbound lanes of the Sprain Brook Parkway. The park features two picnic areas nestled within a heavily wooded landscape as well as a variety of hiking and mountain bike trails.
