In 1965, Westchester County acquired 278 acres from the Boyce Thompson Institute, a botanical research center. As a result, Sprain Ridge Park is home to many unusual and exotic woodland plants. The Thompson family, prominent in Yonkers history, amassed their wealth through mining.
The park offers visitors two designated picnic areas nestled within a heavily wooded landscape. The park features a variety of hiking and mountain bike trails, making it a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
The park is located on a ridge between the northbound and southbound lanes of the Sprain Brook Parkway.
